New and Restored Copper Roofs and Wall-cladding Systems Lead the Way in the 2013 North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) Awards
NEW YORK, NY— A courthouse where a landmark civil rights case took place, a high school in New York City named after the 26th U.S. President and a historic Presbyterian church near the famed “Magnificent Mile” are among this year’s top honorees receiving a North American Copper in Architecture Award.
The copper industry is recognizing 14 new and recently restored buildings in the U.S. and Canada that utilize architectural copper and copper alloys in their design. The 2013 NACIA award recipients include government buildings, academic facilities, houses of worship, an upscale residence on Daniel Island, and many more.
Constructed in 1828, the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri is one of the country’s most prominent architectural landmarks, and has been the site for several important legal cases, including the first two trials leading up to the Dred Scott decision, in which an African-American slave fought for his freedom. To preserve this important piece of American history, the iconic building recently underwent a massive restoration, which involved the installation of a brand new copper roof.
Another beautiful copper restoration can be seen at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx. This restoration returned the roof of the private high school to its original design and provided a waterproofing system to help extend the life of the building.
Additional award recipients included new construction projects, such as the expansion of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago. In its decision to expand, the parish wanted a design that represented a commitment towards the future while respecting the past. To accomplish this vision, pre-patinated copper was used extensively on the new Genevieve and Wayne Gratz Center, an 80,000-square-foot addition built for the church’s outreach programs. Because copper had already adorned the church ornamentally, it allowed the new structure to blend with and embellish the existing structure.
All of these prestigious projects have one thing in common: copper. Known as mankind’s oldest metal, copper not only delivers an unparalleled beauty—it provides durability, longevity and sustainability, making it a preferred building construction material, time and time again.
Established in 2008, The NACIA awards program promotes projects that display innovation and excellence in architectural copper applications, showcasing a wide range of design, detail and craftsmanship. Sponsored by industry representatives at the Copper Development Association (CDA) and the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association (CCBDA), the awards recognize projects across three different categories: New Construction, Renovation/Restoration and Ornamental Applications.
For the second year in a row, educational facilities earned five awards. Notable projects included the Health Sciences Education Building on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus—which was constructed using approximately 250,000 pounds of recycled copper—and the roof replacement of Kingswood High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, which exhibits one of the largest copper roofs in the United States even after 70 years.
“The quality and diversity of the projects continue to impress us with their innovative and striking use of architectural copper,” said Andy Kireta Jr., vice president of CDA’s Building Construction program. “From intricate wall-cladding systems to interior applications using different alloys, we continue to see this age-old metal being used in new and innovative ways.”
