Welcome to Copper Age 2.0, your gateway to discovering copper’s abundance and critical importance.

Thousands of years ago, humanity stepped into the Copper Age, a period marked by advancements in tools, weapons, and society as a whole.

Just as the original Copper Age marked a revolutionary chapter for humanity, we’ve entered another transformative era, where copper holds the key to our sustainable future. The rise of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and ever-more sophisticated electronics is driving a surge in copper demand.

Copper Age 2.0 presents both a tremendous opportunity and a crucial question: how do we ensure a secure and responsible copper supply to build the future we need? Copper Age 2.0 answers this with two key themes:

Copper is Secure

We explore why there’s enough copper to meet future demand, examining the strategies needed to maximize these resources.

Copper is Critical

We delve into the reasons why copper deserves recognition as a critical mineral by the USGS.

#CopperisSecure: Abundant Copper Resources

As the world continues its relentless march towards electrification and renewable energy, the demand for copper, a critical component in numerous industries, has surged.

#CopperisSecure highlights a multi-faceted approach to ensuring a secure copper supply chain.

The U.S. will need to produce and refine more, recycle more, and continue to import from reliable trade partners. All approaches carry risks and limitations, and on their own, can’t meet demand. However, by embracing an “all-of-the-above” approach, we can confidently meet projected demand and ensure a stable copper supply for a sustainable future.

#CopperisCritical: Give Copper Credit

Copper is critical to the global economy and clean energy transition, yet it remains conspicuously absent from the U.S. Geological Survey’s critical mineral list.

While many nations around the world have already recognized copper’s indispensable role by including it in their own critical mineral designations, the US has yet to take this crucial step.

Given copper’s already established role across industries, its increasing demand, and potential supply chain vulnerabilities, it undeniably meets all three criteria for inclusion on the USGS list. By formally designating copper as a critical mineral, the US can proactively address supply chain risks, bolster domestic production, and secure a resilient supply of this essential resource.
