Led by Cunningham | Quill Architects, the comprehensive adaptive reuse of the historic Monticello Dairy established the revival of this lost community landmark in Charlottesville, Virginia. Working with contractor Hourigan, the architects sought to create a community-driven venue to draw people back into the building.

To celebrate the project’s industrial heritage but also create a new identity, the team focused on complementary materials that expressed a stylistic shift from the historically influence Dairy Market. Pre-patinated, verdigris copper flat-lock panels comprise one of the most distinctive elements of this transformation. The cladding complements the Dairy Market’s “Virginia” red brick and emphasizes the floating volume of the office building. A seamless transition between the copper panels and the glass curtain wall accentuates the lightness of the office addition, providing a literal window to the present-day office activities.

The Dairy Market and office building are LEED-certified Silver, due in part to the sourcing of local materials, salvaging and restoring existing elements of the original building, and designing energy-efficient building systems. The decision to select copper cladding reinforced the mission to establish a long-lasting and sustainably responsible building.
