The Boat Barn, as this Jersey-shore residential home is appropriately referred to by its designers, reflects the iconic form of the famed gambrel barn as well as the classic boat storage buildings found throughout the local area. The design team chose a standing seam copper roof with a horizontal seam every 8-feet to reflect the handmade quality that copper roofs can have. The standing seam copper roof, which is an iconic barn vernacular, was also chosen by the design team because it would require no maintenance due to copper’s resiliency, and because the natural patina that would oxidize over time would enhance the beauty of the cedar shingle. The natural handmade quality of this design helps to emphasize the honoring of the area’s history, which was a very important design goal for the team.
