Locally known as “the copper house,” the metal was selected to clad this net-zero, coastal home for both practical and artistic reasons. The house was designed in close collaboration with the local Conservation Commission and exceeds recently updated FEMA regulations. Copper’s minimal maintenance requirements, long lifespan and environmental resilience made it the ideal material for the rugged site’s exposure to Nor’easters.
Copper’s naturally-forming patina will develop over time, allowing the home to artistically blend into the mottled greens and grays of the lichen-covered rocks surrounding and anchoring the home.
In this age of rising sea levels and palatial homes dominating coastal towns and their fragile ecosystems, this house stands out with its compact yet resilient form.
