Even with the constraints of a narrow and long property, 400 Dexter's design team constructed a high-caliber and memorable building through the use of a distinctive copper exterior. Over 740, 1 millimeter thick panels were used selectively to cover approximately 22,200-square-feet of the building's exterior. Four tones of differing patina were specified and installed to a predetermined pattern up to the 8th floor. Embracing copper's natural oxidation process was viewed as a positive, desirable trait by the design team. Additionally, the team was drawn to copper for its durable, low maintenance and light-weight characteristics.
